MONTH OF PRAYER
September is going to be a big month for our church! It is going to be a big month because of one discipline, one reality, one truth…
We are making this a Month of Prayer for Olympia City Church.
I think this is exactly what we need. Exactly what our church needs. Exactly what our city needs. Exactly what our families need. Together let us go bolding to the throne of God, knowing that although we are sinners, our great intercessor Jesus has made it possible for us to approach God through his sacrifice.
Prayer is without a doubt one of the most important spiritual disciplines. It is called a discipline because it takes discipline to continue and remain steadfast in prayer.
I fear in challenging you to focus this month on prayer, it will create a spirit of anxiety. That is the last thing I desire. Rather than anxiety I hope you receive peace. Listen to what Paul said, “…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known unto God” (Phil. 4:6). Richard Foster wrote, “Paul counseled Christians to live free from anxiety. That, of course, is more easily said than done. Everything in our training and in our culture combats a carefree spirit of unconcern…Prayer frees us from anxiety because it teaches us trust. The result is peace: ‘And the peace of God, which passes all understanding will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus’ (Phil. 4:7).
My hope is that at the end of September we will say with Paul, “the peace of God, which passes all understanding has kept our heart and mind in Christ Jesus.”
So here is the plan/the focus…
SEP 1-5 — NATIONS
SEP 6-12 — OLYMPIA METRO AREA
SEP 13-19 — OLYMPIA CITY CHURCH
SEP 20-26 — CITYGROUPS
SEP 27-30 — FAMILY
Each week we will have a specific focus. You can and should definitely pray on other things. Just allow your prayer to take this focus each week. I am excited to have our church praying over these very important areas together!
Throw the date below one your calendar.
SEPTEMBER 15 — PRAYER NIGHT 6:30-7:30 — LOCATION TBA
[we will announce more info soon, but throw this date on your calendar]
Let me give you a few tools that have helped me in my discipline prayer…
SELECT A TIME AND PLACE
Make a plan and stick to that plan. Select a place and time you will pray each day. If you miss a day, don’t stress. Take it one week at a time and one day at a time.
READ A BIBLE PASSAGE FIRST
Reading a passage like Psalm 23 always helps me focus my heart and mind on the Father rather than my endless list of things to accomplish. Pause, open the bible and read before you pray. The Psalms are great place to go before praying.
PRAY WITH YOUR FAMILY
Let this be a month of praying with your family. Pray with your family before meals, before bed, before you leave the house and randomly throughout the day. Talk about each specific topic and let your children pray. Make time this month to pray with your spouse.
PRAY WITH YOUR CITYGROUP
This was a reality with the early church. They prayed together often. If anything our CITYGROUPS should be places of prayer.
KEEP A PRAYER JOURNAL
How cool would it be if you could look back on October 1 to reflect on what you asked God to do and what he accomplished!
Here is a simple image you can download to help remind yourself of the focus for our church.
As an ongoing resource watch our blog as we will be writing on this grand topic of prayer.
